It’s the Friday Night of Halloween, and people are getting ready for a weekend of spooky festivities ahead. At the Vic, there is a big queue as the Surgical Society is kicking the weekend off with a Zombie Hospital. At the door, one is greeted with a number of bloody surgeons, setting the mood for what is to come. As you walk inside the Vic, it is transformed, no longer just a bar in St. Andrews as it has been turned positively spooky. Cobwebs adorn the staircases and various bits of furniture, danger signs, and various tape. Halloween is in full swing at the Vic.

The DJ was on form with all the classic tunes that you want on a Friday night. Everyone had brought their game with a litter of costumes, no ordinary clothes insight. A display of where people’s imagination can take them, it was the perfect excuse to dress crazy. From princesses to zombie cheerleaders to the mad hatter, the Vic had it all. Even all the bar staff were kitted out, most in some sort of bloody surgical clothes which just helped to add to the atmosphere of the event. All very fitting as they were serving a special Halloween shot called “brain haemorrhage” which looked scarily realistic, making one slightly concerned how much the shot would live up to its name. Luckily it’s appearance was the only resemblance as it actually tasted surprisingly good, a creamy texture with a hint of jam, and not very strong!
Like previous events at the Vic, they had both rooms running, the second playing a bit more upbeat house like music rather than the sing-a-long classics of the main room. Music that you would bounce to more, like other events this dipped in and out of busy-ness as people wanted air from the main room, to have a bit more of a boogie, or just to bounce along as they headed outside. Either way in both rooms the music was great, and had some Halloween-esque songs in there too, which isn’t always a given at Halloween events, including the classic of “thriller”.

Whilst at times the dance floor was a little cramped (definitely nowhere near how badly cramped the union came to be on Sunday) it was an overall very fun night and definitely worth the price, especially considering the union’s Sunday night event was of a similar price. One of the best parts was actually the end as the DJ was phasing out of his set he played Mamma Mia, leaving everyone singing along to the words as it was slowly muted out.
It is also worth noting that they had put on the event Facebook page that drink covers were available on request, something which showed an extreme awareness for the current times and I am sure many people would have appreciated it.
