The Stand Sports' World Cup Predictions

Who are you supporting this year in Qatar:

Hannah: England. It is the one time I feel I can wear an England top in Scotland and so I will be milking it, living in my basecamp which will probably be the pub. My Welsh mum will represent that part of the UK, although I am very happy for them, unfortunately the Welsh in me died a while ago. Surely it has to come home eventually?

Kate: USA. I am from Dallas, Texas and am I big football or soccer fan as my fellow countrymen say. I think we are good enough to get out of the group but depending on who we draw in the knockouts we might be a little out of our depth. Dallas is a host city for the 2026 World Cup so I’ll take knockouts this year for a good home run. Apparently, there are rumours that Dallas might host the final so maybe there will be a sprinkling of magic in my hometown.

Akshath: England. I am obviously hoping Gareth Southgate’s team can make the final and I am more optimistic than most I would say. I am confident that we will make the semis at least- fingers crossed!

Who do you think will win it?

Hannah: Brazil. As a Newcastle fan, I rate Bruno Guimarães very highly and him making the Brazil squad did give me a great deal of happiness. I am so excited to see Brazil play, and I am very much hoping that the huge amass of talent will be shown with some tantalising performances on the pitch.

Kate: I also think Brazil are the team that are most taking my fancy. Turns out we are all not very original. I am not surprised they are one of the favourites just look at their squad!

Akshath: I think that it will be Messi’s Argentina v Ronaldo’s Portugal which would be a tasty affair. I am hoping and confident that Portugal can win the trophy.

Who is your wildcard for the tournament?

Hannah: I am going with Serbia. They were impressive in both the Nations League and World Cup qualifiers. With the ultra-talented front two of Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic and the country’s all-time top goals corer Aleksandar Mitrovic they could possibly cause an upset.

Kate: Denmark. I think they will top the group over France which could open up the draw. I think Denmark will reach the quarters and possibly even the semis! Also a quick mention for Serbia as their attacking depth is also impressive

Akshath: Switzerland. I reckon they will make it to the quarter finals at least which will be an impressive run. I think they definitely have the potential to shock a big team, maybe even Brazil.

It is interesting to take a look at Group G. Brazil are one of the favourites for the tournament however they have both Serbia and Switzerland in their group which are two teams we predicted could be wildcards for a good run in this year’s tournament. Alongside Cameroon Group G will certainly be an interesting one to watch.
