Women’s Hockey 1XI: A Stellar Season in Review

Erin Hugo

This season, the Women’s First XI hockey team have had huge success. Unbeaten in their BUCS season so far, they now stand the chance to be promoted into the highest hockey league in the country.

The First XI were moved into the BUCS Premier League North last year, after sweeping competition in the Scottish Tier 1. BUCS Premier North is the one of the second highest BUCs leagues in the country, alongside the Premier League South.

St Andrews 1XI have been unbeaten their entire season, winning six of their matches and drawing one at the start of the season to the Loughborough 2s. Notable successes include their 5-0 win over Nottingham Women’s 2s, and a 4-1 win over the Glasgow first team.

Captain Siena Keijsers comments: 'I am so proud of the team for excelling this season. We have topped the BUCS North Prem league for the first time in history. We are playing against Bristol for promotion into the top BUCS league. This is an incredible feat.'

Keijsers also notes that their victories have been 'no accident:' their hard work and dedication has been paramount to their success. 'We have trained hard week in week out to deliver stellar performances against top teams in the Scottish Prem and University teams across the UK.'

She adds, 'every member of the squad should be extremely proud of themselves!' St Andrews’ next challenge is their playoff match against Bristol 1XI. If they win this match, they are promoted into the BUCS Premier League. This league contains the likes of Loughborough 1s, Durham 1s and Nottingham 1s, all of whom have fielded players for the GB hockey team.

The Saints' big game will be held in Bristol on the 26th March.

We wish all the best to the Women’s First Team and hope that their reign of success continues!
