Welly Ball Launch Party: Reviewed

With St Andrews flooded with students, more eager than ever to return to our small Scottish town, the Welly Ball committee certainly delivered the ‘welcome back’ we all needed. As the largest black-tie dinner and afterparty of the year, the Welly Ball committee had much to live up to. This Freshers’ Week, they certainly maintained their status with the perfect kick-off to get us excited for the events to come: Welly Ball Launch!

Last Thursday, I headed to Lupo’s on North Street, which served as the venue this year. I was quickly swept into line with many anticipating students, all eyeing those wearing wellies―surely getting excited to sport their own at the renowned ball later this year. The venue was divided into 3 separate areas, featuring 2 bars and a dance floor in between. One bar was specifically for ordering drinks and the other for serving them; their tag-team bar operation made getting a drink easy and prevented the line from ever piling up.

Best of all, going back and forth between the bars gave everyone a chance to walk through, or ‘dance through,’ the room which not only kept the dance floor relevant but also encouraged you to enjoy some time dancing. I certainly found myself getting caught up in the music to the point of forgetting that I had ordered! The drinks themselves were also something to note as they were much more sophisticated than the traditional options you would typically find on a night out.

As more and more people began to fill in, the atmosphere of the space was electrified. Every inch was buzzing with excitement for both launching such a central event of the year and simply for being back in St Andrews and enjoying in-person events once again. While we traditionally expect some laid-back moments at these sorts of events, the DJ wasted no time. The music choice was the perfect blend to get the entire dance floor packed to the brim with people. By the halfway point of the event, practically every single person that attended was on the dance floor having the time of their lives, me included. The enthusiasm from the crowd of attendees lasted well into the night, up until the event had ended.

Overall, one of the key things that struck me about the event was how organised everything was. All of the committee members got everyone inside the event space quickly and explained their new and efficient drink ordering system. It was nice not having to stand in the queue for long outside, and their organisation took away the normal confusion and chaos that can sometimes happen at these types of events. The committee members really put thought into how the event was going to run and it made all the difference for those attending.

The other thing that really made this an event to remember was the overall enthusiasm of the attendees. Both the joy of being back in St Andrews combined with the excitement of one of the year’s most coveted events officially launching made the entire night an absolute joy. If this is any indication of what is in store for the Welly Ball, I would urge everyone to go!
