Welly Ball Launch — 'nothing special'

One of the greatest joys of Freshers' Week is that first-years haven't discovered anything outside of the Market Street thoroughfare yet (Taste is safe from the hoards!). This applies equally well to nightlife—while the freshers pack into 601 to have their dreams crushed at Clan Warfare or see whichever tribute act braves the drive to St Andrews, the rest of the town is open for wonderful, uncrowded business. That means you can enjoy a night out in peace without (many) first years grilling you on name, course, previous hall of residence, and whether you’re adopting.

The Welly Ball Launch at The Vic is one of these events, offering a sponsored night of fun—even if the final product differed little from a standard night out in the venue. While the eponymous event is legendary in the St Andrews social calendar, mainly for its unique footwear-based dress code, the launch was nowhere near as strict with shoes. Only a handful of guests wore wellington boots at all—and with this the closest the event got to unique theming, there was little to distinguish Welly Launch as anything different from the typical Vic fare.

The Welly name carries plenty of weight, so the dancefloor was over three-quarters full by the time the clock struck midnight and ticket resale began. Freshers unimpressed by the Clan Warfare afterparty gradually began to arrive en mass, but the atmosphere was high enough that jaded club-goers mixed without a problem. BPM’s DJs provided an endless stream of dance tunes, and spirits stayed up long into the night. It was nothing special, but The Vic is The Vic—and a stray Welly or two on the dance floor couldn’t harm the mood.
