Welly Ball 2019: What to Wear

Welly Ball is one of the best events St Andrews has to offer, and we here at the Stand want to ensure that you can enjoy your night to the fullest, so here are a few tips on what to wear or at least keep in mind this year.

1. Oversized jackets & coats

Extremely broad, but keep in mind that while Kinkell Byre is generally warm, you will spend quite a bit of time going in and out and getting there except if you’re investing in a taxi. Shivering half of the night is not the best prospect, and so easy to avoid! Find a big thick coat to wrap yourself in. If you don’t have anything you want to wear because, like me, you have a propensity to lose everything when you go out, quite a few charity shops around town also sell old men’s (read: oversized) blazer jackets which, lucky for us, are back in style. Your exposed back in a camisole dress will thank you.

2. Dresses!

Now that you are safely wrapped in a warm blanket, let’s look at your dress. The length of the dress kind of depends on the height of your Wellies, but if you have the conventional high ones, a short or midi dress are the least likely to fold weirdly around your boots. Since you’re wearing big and sometimes clunky boots, dressing it way up with your dress can be fun.

As mentioned above, camisoles, or sparkly, velvety or puffy dresses are all options to be explored. If you’re looking for something new and have (at the time this article comes out) very little time, Zara does offer next-day shipping, and there’s always H&M. If you’re trying to not have as much impact on the planet, there are always dresses to be found in charity shops.  Make an afternoon out of it!

3. Suits

Sadly there seems to be significantly less room for innovation for men, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. One of the most striking outfits I’ve seen at a ball was a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto-coloured suit. What about wearing a brooch 0r pin? Or velvet trousers?

4. Wellies

The domination of the Hunter boots in St Andrews has been made fun of so much over the years that it’s almost expected that everyone has some. But if you don’t, have no fear! The Stand is here for you. They are generally on sale on the St Andrews Facebook groups quite regularly, and you can find a perfectly fine pair of wellies in many charity shops if you’re lucky enough to have a common foot size. There are also several stores which sell nice new rain boots in St Andrews if you’re looking to invest, and the Mountain Warehouse Store seems to be clearing its stock.

That’s it folks! Enjoy Welly Ball.
