Treading Through Winter — Students' November Footwear Favourites

Tatiana Tkachenko

Feet are a sensory part of the body which makes them extremely sensitive to drastic temperature changes. This's why, as we walk into winter, we need to make sure that the outfits we pick keep our feet as protected from the cold as much as the rest of our body.

I took to the library to ask St Andrews students what they were doing to keep their feet warm.

Sambas

While people may consider Adidas Sambas the shoes of the summer, St Andrews students are finding a way to keep them fashionable even in the November chill - with long warm socks!

As shown in the photos above, these shoes pair as a great accessory to any casual outfit, especially jeans.

However, the low-top structure of sambas does sometimes make them difficult to keep during winter months as a large part of the ankles remain exposed to the cold air.

Therefore, if you're looking for a way to keep wearing them, investing in a good few pairs of long socks that can protect all exposed parts of the feet will definitely do the trick.

Brands such as Adidas and Nike, which can be ordered online, offer great deals when ordering long socks in a bundle. Moreover, H&M in town also provides sets of these socks which can be bought in 2s or 4s.

Warm Socks

The trend of keeping more summery and open shoes as a wardrobe staple does not only pertain to sambas in St Andrews! Despite only being able to capture one example on camera, many students have been pairing stylish, unique dress shoes with a pair of warm, fuzzy socks.

The girl photographed above mentioned that she paired these black dress shoes with baggy trousers. That way, she was able to disguise her wool socks that kept her warm.

Boots of all sizes and colours

Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming majority of footwear in St Andrews this season is boots. Several of the pictured boots, especially the Dr Martens, were described as winter essentials for their waterproof quality.

Most of the boots I saw, and the ones pictured, are black. I received mixed responses on why each student had chosen this colour: whilst a good half of the students stated that it was because it matched a lot of their winter wardrobe, another half of the students stated that it’s because they did not have to worry about the boots getting dirty or affected by winter rain. The two pictured coloured boots were a light brown and cherry colour two very fall tones.

I was most surprised by the overwhelming diversity of styles of boots that students were choosing to wear. As pictured above, I managed to capture boots that could suit almost every occasion. Comfortable Uggs for the library; Dr Martens for an everyday look and black dress boots which can make any outfit look more sophisticated.

All in all, St Andrews students are definitely not letting their feet get cold this semester whether it be through warm socks or unique boots and, after reading this article, you shouldn’t either.
