The Singles’ Guide to Valentine

For fellow singles who may not be aware, the dreaded valentine’s day is quickly approaching once again. Valentine’s day is supposed to be full of love, excitement, and romance, but for some, it can often be a disheartening reminder of failed relationships, breakups, and loneliness. However, valentines day does not have to just be a special day for those in relationships, it can be a celebration for your love for friends, family and yourself. So here I present a list of things to do for singles, on February 14th to make it fun and memorable. Firstly, have a Palentines day. Just because you are not in a relationship does not mean you have to spend the day alone. Get a group of your single pals together and make your day eventful. Drink some cocktails, have a movie marathon, go out for a fancy dinner. Whatever you decide, do it together and appreciate the strong friendships you have in your life.

In fact, if you are feeling a little overambitious to make the most of your youth and singleness this year, then turn your ‘palentines’ into a party. Invite your friends over, make a theme, and put on your favourite songs. Treat valentines day as a reason to get dressed up and have some fun.

Photoshoot

If you’re someone who tends to feel a little low around valentines day, or your confidence drops a tiny bit, then it is time to remind yourself how amazing you are as a single by taking part in a photoshoot. Grab a friend (or several), get dressed up and have fun posing in front of the camera. With the beautiful West sands, or Sallies Quad as your background, you have no excuse to not get some great shots.

Social media cleanse

I would recommend this to anyone on any day, but especially on valentines day. If you have recently left a relationship, or you are scared to see what your ex is doing on the 14th, then I really suggest taking a few days off from social media. Spend your time with real people and activities around you. Let yourself fall completely into a book, or a film, or walk, and rid your mind of Instagram post likes, and stories. If anything, this will just let your social and mental battery recharge for a little while.

Spa-day

If you are someone who really wants to be pampered on Valentines day, you don’t need a significant other to get that. You can treat yourself and book a spa-day, at the Kohler Waters Spa at the Old Course hotel. It’s always important to have some self-care time, so I highly recommend getting a de-stressing massage, or simply relaxing and letting yourself rejuvenate.

Retail therapy

Everyone deserves a gift on Valentines, and since no-one knows you better than you, there is no-one better to receive a gift from. Use this day as an excuse to get that item you have had your eye on for a while but haven’t had the courage to buy it. Treat yourself to new jewellry, clothes, or accessories. There is nothing better than opening a package for something that you bought and know you are going to love. Alternatively, another great new trend is to start a Valentines secret Santa with your friends. This way you can spread joy by gifting something special for a loved one, and brighten your day by opening a present from a friend.

Although the media has turned Valentine’s Day into a day for romance and relationships, I still believe that there is a lot of love and joy involved for the singles. So if you are looking for something to do this February 14th, either by yourself or with some friends or family, then use this list!
