The St Andrews Typhoons won big in the annual Jonny Wookey Memorial Varsity Game this past Thursday, beating the Edinburgh Eagles 6-2 in an exciting match.

The match is played in memory of Jonny Wookey, a founding member of the Ice Hockey Club in St Andrews. After Jonny tragically passed away just before his graduation in 2012, the Wookey Game was established both as a tribute and a fundraiser for the club. Tributes are also made to Kieran McCann, a first-year Typhoon who sadly passed in 2015.

The fixture is one of the biggest sporting events in the St Andrews student calendar and is played in front of over 700 fans. This match is very important to the St Andrews ice hockey players, who advertise and look forward to it throughout the year.

The Typhoons came into the game as the favorites, being both the 2024-25 BUIHA North Champions and undefeated against the Eagles in the regular BUIHA season.

The first period was action-packed for the Typhoons, with four goals being scored by Nikos Ninios (#12), who led the Typhoons with 22 points in the regular season, Jack Biggs (#27), Andrew Benstead (#28), and Oscar Aylward (#17). The scoring for the second period was opened up by Nico Corporon (#86).

The Eagles scored later, but in the third period, Bryce O’Brien (#19) widened the gap. Despite a last goal by the Eagles, the typhoons were victorious in what now becomes their 9th out of 13 Jonny Wookey games won.

With another Wookey win under their belt, the Typhoons continue to honor the legacy of Jonny Wookey and Kieran McCann in true St Andrews spirit.
