St Andrews Snowsports (SAS) is the ski and snowboard club here at St Andrews. With their raving socials, love of joss, and success on the slopes, SAS has become one of the biggest and most popular sports clubs at St Andrews. SAS President Tai Sherman and Trip Coordinator Audrey Goldfield answer your questions about the club.
Do you need experience to join SAS?
You do not need any prior skiing or snowboarding experience to join SAS, and there are opportunities for all skill levels! If you are keen to learn, there are 3-lesson beginner trainings for only £30, including transportation and rentals.
What are the membership options?
SAS has two membership options: the AU membership and the social membership. The AU membership is what you’re looking for if you are interested in getting on the slopes and participating in any lessons, trainings, or competitions. The social membership is great for those who want to be involved with SAS outside of skiing and snowboarding.
What opportunities are there to go on the slopes?
There are training opportunities nearly every week during term, but there is no obligation to be at all of them. When snow falls in second semester, there are chances to go up to the Highlands to train. Competitions happen throughout the year against other universities, and there is no skill requirement to compete, so it is a great way to get in some time at the slopes.
How often do socials happen?
SAS hosts a social most weeks of term. There are the classic monthly Sinners socials but also other fun socials like Christmas Dinner and trip launch party. Tai says SAS is ‘well known for our big Sinners events. We get DJs, some drinks, and good vibes before we all hit the Union. We also hold regular pub nights, as well as other one-off events across the year. All our events are open to anyone, and we really encourage anyone to drop by—the more the merrier!’

What is the ski trip?
SAS has an annual sell-out ski trip in the French Alps every January in the last week of winter break before term starts. This year, the club is headed to Val Thorens, one of the top skiing destinations in the Alps. There’s skiing, après, daytime events, and club nights, so there’s lots of fun activities to choose from, whether you want to spend your time on the slopes, at après and the club, or a mix of everything.
Audrey says: ‘If you’re on the fence about coming, do it! There is no prior experience needed, and you won’t regret it at all. You’re sure to have the time of your life! People don’t call it the best week of the year for no reason!’
