University RAG weeks are fantastic student-run charitable fundraising campaigns, raising money through exciting happenings. At St Andrews, this years’ Raising and Giving Week is being held from the 24th-30th January, and will host a wide range of sell-out events, individual projects and collections.
The team aims to embody charitable giving as a university-wide effort, whilst engaging with the local community. Charities that they are supporting this year include IJM, Shelter Scotland, and LoveOliver. I was really drawn to this years’ charities, with each raising money for incredible causes, and reaching areas of need across the world. The International Justice Mission aims to take action to help end slavery and violence today. Shelter Scotland, a more locally based team exists to the defend the right to a safe home and looks to end the devastating housing emergency in the local, and national community. Finally, LoveOliver, another Scotland based charity, funds research into childhood cancer, as well as providing support to the families affected by it.
Whilst this RAG week is providing us with exciting events and hilarious activities, it’s great to remember the worthy causes we can support through donations. Here are our recommendations for things to get involved with this RAG Week!
1. Taskmaster – Saturday 29th January, 11am-6pm, Union
Following the hit TV show Taskmaster, the RAG week team are now giving you the opportunity to prove yourself in their very own version! Compete against your friends to see who can come up with the best, most inventive and most bizarre solutions to tasks set! Competitors will complete a series of challenges and are awarded points based on each performance. With tickets at only £3, this is a fantastically fun event to sign up for, and is bound to provide hysterical moments with friends!

2. Buzzed Bingo – Tuesday 25th January, 7:30pm-12am
Buzzed bingo is turning traditional bingo on its head! In a special night of fun games and fantastic prizes, this is an event that is not to be missed. The amazing Hummingbirds A Cappella group with performing, alongside hosts from the Comedy Society. Special guest host, Drag Superstar, Vilith Grimm will also be making an appearance on the night, filled with fun! Amazing prizes are also being offered, including a Barbour Voucher, and tickets for the St Andrews Aquarium! There are only a handful of tickets left, so get yours before they’re gone.

3. Escape Rooms – 24th-25th January, 9am-7pm, Union
A RAG Week classic is back, with 2 brand new escape rooms to try out, designed by their wonderful team! Challenge yourself with a team of friends to break codes and solve puzzles to escape from a locked room. With 2 themed rooms to choose from, it’s guaranteed to be a great time for any group.
Prison Break – your friends have been framed for a crime they did not commit and have been moved to the office of the prison in which they are being held. It’s your team’s job to find the USB containing the evidence for their case and set them free, before the Warden returns! You only have 45 minutes, so you’ll have to be quick!
McLion Code – Tori McLion (Rory McLion’s evil twin) has gone mad! She plans to destroy every Pablo in an hour! Only you and your team can solve the mystery, crack the code to her Pablo destruction machine, and save nights out at 601!

These are just a few of the amazing events being run throughout the week, and all money goes towards a fantastic cause in the three chosen charities. My personal recommendation for the week is the buzzed bingo event being held in the union. It has a perfect mix of fun games, great hosts and some special guest music groups to enjoy throughout the evening. It’s definitely an evening not to miss, so make sure to get involved and make the most of these unique events!
