On the Rocks, a St Andrews staple since 2009, will be returning this spring from April 3rd-12th, bringing with it an exciting array of performances and exhibitions. On the Rocks boasts the title of being the largest student run arts festival in the UK, with events showcasing everything from photography to fashion to music. It allows St. Andrews’ talented and overwhelmingly artistically inclined student body to perform in front of a broader audience, as well as draw in participants from beyond the city lines.
The festival’s theme this year is sustainability, a noticeably more common objective on campus. Between the Climate Change protests earlier this year, the sustainable focus of many of the fashion shows, and the numerous talks and panels with an environmentally conscious outlook, the St. Andrews student body has clearly come to recognise that to have a sustainable campus, everyone needs to do their part. In keeping with this theme, many of the events for On the Rocks will be centred around sustainability, either making it the focus of the exhibition or directly incorporating it into design and production.
There are sure to be plenty of events this April to keep students occupied. Not to be missed, on April 4th, the University of St. Andrews Dance Club will be putting on ‘Rebirth’, a showcase focused on renewal and what it means to be reborn. On April 5th, pay a visit to the St. Andrews Botanic Garden for a Photography Workshop from the joint efforts of PhotoSoc and BioSoc, and enjoy yet another excuse to appreciate the beauty of St. Andrews.
Those looking to break a sweat should join in on the Black Tie Bike Parade on April 4th, a way to promote sustainable transportation and enjoy live music while you bike or skate your way through town donning formal wear. Or, on April 7th, check out Groovy Green Golf, a nine-hole course designed by students and made entirely of recycled materials.
Alongside the activities above, there is to be no shortage of dance, theatre, craftsmanship, and musical events, so everyone is encouraged to attend whatever may spark their interest.
