In Defence of Trends

The Met Gala, arguably one of the biggest and most influential fashion events of the year, has recently released its 2020 Gala theme: “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” The theme announcement really had me thinking about how fashion truly defines the decades, and also about what might make something “timeless” but also how past trends come back around out of seemingly thin air. And as someone who loves fashion but tries to run as far away from trends as possible, I did not know what to make of all of this.

When I think back to elementary school, what truly defined that period of time for me was that I and everyone around me was decked out in Abercrombie & Fitch. As a mid-teen, I looked back on old photos thinking “Why was I wearing that?!” and I decided to adopt a personal style that stayed far away from trends in an effort to look more timeless. My fashion mantra has really been to invest in good classics which make up most of my wardrobe, and accessorize well with trendier items, which is what I mainly do to this very day.

However, I have come to a realisation that trends are what connect us. Being able to participate in the trends of each decade are is a fun way to remeber the way things used to be, and to share in a memory with society similar to the music we listened to, the current events we remember happening at that time in our lives and so forth. And even if what we wear now looks ridiculous in 25 years, there is a time and a place for every kind of clothing and there will always be time later to wear put-together business casual.

It will be interesting to see how the attendees at the Met Gala will interpret the theme in 2020 and I can’t wait to embrace current and old trends in my own wardrobe in the months to come.
