The leaves are falling, the rain is pouring and the sweaters are donned- it can only mean one thing – autumn is here (or of course, you’re anywhere in Scotland, and at any time of year). With the change of seasons, we are once again seeing trends change – and tiktok’s new fascination? Scandi style.
Of course, the Scandi fever didn’t come from nowhere. Here are the inspirations I can draw:
Djerf Avenue
Over the spring and summer we saw Matilda Djerf take the US by storm with her fuzzy bathrobes and Dyson Air-Wrapped hair. In a blink of an eye, she had sold millions of units of Scandi style pieces that, as a Swede, she knew all too well. Did she sell thousands of collared shirts you can find easily in the Salvation Army on Church Street? Yes, she did – and might I add, effortlessly. But according to my calculations (I’m a humanities student), she’s instigated a craze throughout the Global North.
The Summer of Cargo Pants
Summer, with its seemingly never ending heatwaves, rolled round quickly, bringing with it the return of cargo pants. The androgyny of the baggy trousers lends a cool alternative to short-shorts and bikinis, and is a comfort we’ve brought into Autumn. In a similar vein, baggy or straight leg jeans, often tied at the back with an old shoelace to keep them up, are another warmer alternative with the same silhouette. And the Air Forces still sodden with mud from summer festivals? Still on our feet.

I wear glasses and I’m finally proud of it.
Square tops? Check. Square bottoms? Check. ‘So what comes next?’, questioned the designer glasses brand Jimmy Fairly. Square heads seemed like the obvious choice. Gone were the aviators or the Harry Potter glasses we all came to hate as the years flew by and suddenly our glasses were in a continuous state of condensation as we breathed through our masks during COVID-19. In their place Jimmy Fairly delivered us these larger-than-life, larger-than-eyes spectacles that, beyond just being an instrument to help us see, were now finally a part of our outfit. No longer forgotten, but revered.
So, how do you do it? Just think boxy. It doesn’t matter whether you’re built like a door or an hourglass, because the magic of scandi style is that it covers everything. It has to, because, well, it’s cold as ****.

Don some two-sizes-too-big jeans, a white blouse (preferably from GANNI), almost too-large specs, a fuzzy vest, a fuzzy jumper, a fuzzy coat and finally a fuzzy scarf; become the Copenhagen girl of your dreams. Throw on bulky jewelry and before you know it, you’ll be looking like Victoria Paris’s and Matilda Djerf’s love child. Finalement, slick your hair back in a high ponytail, and grab a chai latte while you’re at it.
