A Seemingly Uneventful Halloween

The bright light of the outside shines through the windows piercing my sleepy eyes. I hear my family stomping around the house, going about their day as if it were any other. I ponder whether it is worth it to wake up or sleep for a couple more minutes; I might as well, there is nothing I need to get ready for. I turn over in my bed, ‘a few more minutes’ I say to myself as I slowly sink into the sheets. Suddenly, my relaxation came to a screeching halt as my little brother and mom begin to rehearse his new song for choir. The abnormally loud volume of his voice pierced my ears. My peaceful morning was destroyed.

I begin my day like any other: wash my face, brush my teeth, do my skincare, and go make a coffee. Today was no exception. As I tried to regain my zen, my brother ran up to me only to start viciously tapping my shoulder:

“Alissa. Alissa. ALISSA?!”

“WHAT!” I replied, slightly annoyed.

“What are you going to be for Halloween?” he asks.

My eyes widened as I looked at my phone and realised that today is in fact Halloween. Normally, I would have been meticulously planning the holiday in advance, however, since the pandemic the days have seemingly blurred together. Today felt just as dull as any other, par a few decorations here and there. I look back to my little brother, who was patiently waiting for an answer. Ashamed that I had admittedly forgotten about Halloween, I shrugged it off and diverted the interrogation: “I don’t know… What are you going to be?” He proudly says some Brawl Stars characters that I of course have never heard of.

I went back to my room to scroll through social media in peace. Something that I once thought to be so divisive has become my sanctuary. Scrolling through what feels like miles of social media pages, I see that my family and friends are still making the most of the situation at hand and enjoying their Halloween with some spooky nights in! As restrictions tighten, my friends back in St. Andrews celebrated to the best of their ability with a drink (or two) at home, watching scary movies or even carving pumpkins, all while dressing up too! Their dedication to maintaining some morsel of normalcy made me recognise how much I allowed life to pass me by during quarantine. The coronavirus has made my world feel like it was slowly crumbling but this Halloween sparked a change in my attitude. I realised that my life is worth more than sitting around and waiting for a vaccine to save the day. The pandemic has been a pain to us all, but I hope to remind you that you should not let life pass you by; make the most of the situation! Our life is not dictated by what we cannot do, rather how we respond to given situations. I am no longer going to let the days pass me by, and I encourage you to do the same!
